1917-2012
Artist | Gentleman | Socialite | Renaissance Man

John Van Haver
John Van Haver was a man of impressive physique, passions, and personality. Consistently pursuing excellence, Van Haver was known to be the source of much laughter at social gatherings. He was a lover of people, parties, adventure, and the finer things in life. As a man who spared no expense in terms of luxury, he bought Loeb Farm in Charlevoix, Michigan, and renovated it into Castle Van Haver.

After a successful career as a top executive, Van Haver restored Castle Van Haver into a tourist attraction, opening up the castle, his place of residence, to the public. Often he would explain to visitors the process in which he made mold to cast aluminum and bronze artworks. He was a lover of his community, and an admirer of beautiful women.

In his works, many of the curves present in Van Haver’s psychedelic pieces are reminiscent of the female anatomy. Known as a man who loved to have beautiful women on his arm, Van Haver displays an alluring and intriguing perspective for the viewer.

However, as the years passed, Van Haver, a man known for charm and charisma, put forth artwork that many who knew him would never expect.  His work is believed by some to portray a deeper and darker sense of his own actuality. Paintings such as his self-portrait portray sinister and menacing figures. Alone within the silent walls of the Castle Van Haver, the aging man was driven to express an inner turmoil that many still do not comprehend. Night after night, hour after hour, Van Haver would express a complex version of his inner ego and perception of the world. Through his artwork, Van Haver let down a wall that many never attempt to remove between their inner fears and the surrounding society.

Lust, sorrow, inner demons, and self-perception all play into the themes of Van Haver’s paintings. Intrigue and emotional movement cannot be helped when standing before Van Haver’s artwork. As such, the paintings promise to be just as timeless as the emotions they stir.
